Schaefer's Old Time Dances
Commissioned in 2017 by The Forbes Town and District Band.
This piece is a medley of folk tunes collected and played by local Forbes musician Harry Schaefer (1876-1954). Harry played the violin at dances in the local area - what we know today as a 'Bush Dance'. Unlike most other dance musicians of the time, Harry kept a written record of the tunes he played. Some were popular tunes, some were well known folk dances from around the world and some were Australian tunes he learned from other dance musicians. Harry's hand written manuscripts are the only record of some of these early Australian folk dance tunes. It has been a pleasure bringing some forgotten Australian folk tunes back to life and combining them with others from around the world to produce an authentic old time dance set!
