A Story To Tell
Grade 1.5+
List piece for the 2024 Victorian School Music Festival - Junior Section.
Ideal contrasting work to challenge your young players for a concert or festival. The directors for this commissioned work wanted a piece with contrasting sections, but rather than write a standard fast - slow - fast I thought I should try something different. I came up with the idea of creating contrasting sections that use the same melody - a bit like a theme and variations, except that the piece plays straight through. The melody moves through most sections of the band and every part has important moments to play. The French horn and oboe are doubled at all times. Some sections have cues for flexibility. Transitions have been written with developing players in mind. Plenty of teaching opportunities. Available in print and PDF download.
'A Story To Tell' was commissioned by the Matthew Pearce Public School Band directed by Garry Clark and Renee Boland, and written for their Intermediate group (players in their 2nd year). Matthew Pearce Public School has an incredible band program in Sydney's north west. The premiere performance was at the NSW Schools Band Festival on the 19th of August 2018.
